Waste-paper exporters cancel strike action

Twelve major waste-paper exporters gave up a plan to stop service. They announced the planned strike last week in a newspaper, but representative Lau Yiu-shing said the stoppage scheduled for today was cancelled because the Marine Department agreed to let them move to the public cargo area in the Rambler Channel. They will hold a meeting to discuss relocation arrangements next month.

6.4m lunar travellers forecast

An estimated 6.43 million travellers will pass through land, sea and air control points during the Lunar New Year holiday, a jump of about 11 per cent over last year. The Immigration Department expects about 2.12 million people to pass through the busiest checkpoint, at Lo Wu, from February 2 to 9 - a daily average of about 265,000. The first day of the Lunar New Year falls on Thursday.

5 Chinese arrested over ketamine

Canadian law enforcement agencies last month made the country's largest seizure of ketamine - about 1,000 kilograms worth more than HK$117 million - after it arrived in Vancouver in a shipping container carrying coffee mugs from Hong Kong. Five Chinese nationals, two of them Canadian residents, were arrested in later raids on two drug laboratories in Richmond.

Drug runners held in stake-out

Six suspected drug couriers were arrested after an undercover police operation to monitor huts in Lei Yue Mun used as drug packaging and distribution centres. The team of officers disguised themselves as tourists, anglers and photographers during the month-long surveillance of the huts, police said.

Woman dies in Sha Tin plunge

Police are trying to establish the identity of a woman thought to be in her 20s who leapt to her death from Hing Lam House in Kwong Lam Court, Sha Tin. No identification document was found on her.

11 injured in Tsing Yi accident

Eleven passengers were injured when their bus swerved to avoid hitting a car and crashed into a concrete embankment near Cheung Tsing Tunnel on Tsing Kwai Highway, Tsing Yi.
