LOCALS now have a chance to appreciate the beautiful and delicate art of wood carving in ancient China - thanks to an ongoing exhibition which showcases over 130 selected artworks from the Fujian Provincial Museum.

  Jointly presented by the Fung Ping Shan Museum and the Fujian Provincial Museum, the exhibition features carvings in tree root, boxwood, gilt wood depicting religious myths, historical tales and folklore as well as some designs suggesting high rank, happy marriage and prosperity.

   ''We hope to enhance local understanding of ancient Fujian culture and at the same time promote cultural exchange,'' said Fujian Provincial Museum secretary general Cheng Bihong.

  Most displays are from the Qing Dynasty, while the three sculptures date back to the Ming Dynasty.

  ''The pieces from the Ming Dynasty are the most treasured items from both the historical and artistic points of view,'' Fung Ping Shan Museum assistant curator Yeung Chun-tong said.

  ''It is a good opportunity for youths to learn about our Chinese culture and heritage,'' Mr Yeung said.

    The exhibition is open until June 25 at the Fung Ping Shan Museum in the University Hong Kong.
