Saab in new drive for bigger stake

SWEDISH car manufacturer Saab is hoping to gain an even bigger stake in Hong Kong's convertible car market over the next year with the release of its latest edition of the 900 series.

Swedish Motors, Saab's exclusive dealer for the Hong Kong, Macau and China region, unveiled the new car yesterday.

Henry Leung, director and general manager of sales and marketing at Swedish Motors, said Saab was one of the dominant manufacturers of convertibles in the $500,000 market in Hong Kong with a 35 to 40 per cent stake.

He said Saab vehicles took up about 10 per cent of the convertible car market in the territory and hoped the price of the new car, at just under $500,000 on the road, would increase market share.

''We feel the price is quite reasonable and we are confident we will be selling around 100 cars this year.'' Also unveiled at the ceremony were Saab's new stretched four and six door 9000 Griffin limousines.

Swedish Motors' chairman, Christer Agell, who unveiled the new vehicles, said the limousines were ideal for business and the hotel industry in Hong Kong and the mainland.

He said the company planned to start selling the $1.1 million limousines in China in the next two to three months and was expecting to sell two cars a month.
