Helen Dalley

Tamara Heber-Percy and James Lohan are the husband and wife team behind boutique and luxury hotel booking specialists Mr & Mrs Smith. They created the company out of frustration over a decade ago while they were dating, and today their chic travel guides are a favourite among travellers looking for extraordinary properties.
'I was looking for somewhere nice to take Tam, and the guidebooks we were using weren't giving particularly good recommendations. It was all chintzy country houses, no duvets, and scratchy sheets and hairdryers attached to the wall,' Lohan recalls. 
Heber-Percy adds with a laugh: 'A lot of them were more OAP than VIP.' One weekend, after one such experience, the couple decided they'd had enough and drew up a list of what they expected from a hotel and a guidebook: from the best places for Sunday brunch to fun things to do as a couple in the area. 
'We wanted to arrange for couples to go away for the weekend and write reviews as 'Mr and Mrs Smith', in a very anecdotal style,' Lohan says.
With no experience in the travel industry - Lohan's background is restaurants, bars and clubs, while Heber-Percy used to run  her own introductions agency - they were initially worried that people wouldn't take them seriously. 
Unfortunately, they were right. Several publishers told the couple they'd never make any money in such an overcrowded market. Even so, they decided to remortgage their house to set up their own business. 
The move has paid off because, besides its global presence, big names such as Dita Von Teese and Stella McCartney have both written reviews for them, and their business is expanding to include more family-focused getaways and self-catering properties, now that the couple have two children.
Lohan and Heber-Percy first met in Europe's party capital, Ibiza - not on a crowded dance floor but through a mutual friend - and still have such a fondness for the sunny Spanish isle that they go on holiday there every year. 
'Our top tip for Ibiza would be Atzaro, a restored family finca situated in an orange grove with a beautiful pool. Being halfway between Ibiza town and Santa Eulalia, it's away from the main crowds but still close enough to head into town if you fancy a change of scenery, or a meal in one of Ibiza's great restaurants,' Heber-Percy says, adding that they enjoy taking a boat over to nearby Formentera,  a small, sleepy island that's a 30-minute boat ride from Ibiza town.
One property of romantic significance for  the couple is the 101 Hotel in Reykjavik, Iceland, where they were engaged. 'Tam had no idea, and I'd only bought the diamond, not the ring, so I had this diamond in my pocket all weekend, waiting for the perfect moment,' Lohan says. 'We went snowmobiling, rode with huskies, visited nearby volcanoes ... it was brilliant, but the right occasion never quite presented itself. 
'On the last night, I hired a four-by-four to go and find the northern lights, but there was a blizzard, so we ended up going off-road and stopping off at a black lava beach with icebergs crashing in - it was a bit edgy, but very dramatic, and I got my 'yes'!'
Another property with the Mr & Mrs Smith 'amour factor' is Jardins Secrets, an 18-room hotel and spa in Provence, France, with hand-painted wallpaper, canopied beds and chandeliers for a grand 18th-century vibe. 'It's owned by a photographer and interior designer, so it looks beautiful; everywhere  you look is like the frame of a shot,' says Heber-Percy.
Outside Europe, the United States, especially California, is another favourite destination. 'One really memorable holiday we had was driving from San Francisco down to L.A. through Big Sur, along the coastal road Highway 1,' Heber-Percy says. It was along this gorgeous coastal stretch that the couple found one of their favourite hotels in the world, the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur on California's central coast, with just 39 guest rooms and two private houses. 
'It has little huts dramatically situated on the edge of a cliff, and they're made out of redwood so you feel like you're part of nature. Each one is  secluded and private, and they're eco-friendly, too,' Heber-Percy says. Besides its sustainable accommodation, the inn also does pick-ups in a Lexus Hybrid and is powered by solar energy. 
For their honeymoon, the couple chose to safari in South Africa at Royal Malewane, which is situated on its own private game reserve within the Greater Kruger National Park, where lions, leopards and black and white rhinos roam. 
'It's done out like a private home and very welcoming. It's run by a wonderful lady who owns two other similar accommodations in South Africa; La Residence and Birkenhead House. It's quite off the beaten track, so you don't feel like you're in a zoo, which can happen when you're on safari,' Lohan says.
Another favourite is St Lucia's romantic resort, Jade Mountain. It has no telephones, television or radio, so couples get each other's full attention, and there are pristine coral reefs nearby. 'What we loved most about it was the architecture; it's done in layers, almost like a cake, and there is no fourth wall or windows,' Heber-Percy says. 
'It's almost like a James Bond villain's evil lair, and in some of the rooms there's a pool at the foot of the bed, which is bonkers, but it works,' Lohan adds.
Asia also has its place in the couple's hearts. They single out Singapore's Fullerton Bay Hotel  as one of their top romantic spots. 'There are jacuzzis hidden away from the infinity pool for extra privacy, and while there are  fabulous views of Marina Bay Sands and the city skyline, the  hotel itself is very laid back,' Heber-Percy says. 
For couples looking for a weekend retreat even closer to home, Lohan and Heber-Percy suggest Hong Kong's The Upper House for its spacious spa-inspired bathrooms with free-standing limestone baths. They say chef  Gray Kunz's Michelin-star cuisine  at Cafe Gray Deluxe - with steamed lobster and filet mignon, drinks such as deluxe mojitos and Hong Kong highballs - might just put  you in the mood for love.
NAUGHTY MUSTS
Remember to pack some candles; candle light always helps set the scene for a night of passion.  
Book restaurants to guarantee your reservation. Say it's a special occasion even if it isn't. That way you should get a good table.  
Take a piece of luggage each and pack half and half. That way, if one of your cases disappears, you still have something to wear.  
Ask if a hotel has any corner rooms when you're booking. They're often the same category and same price but have better views.  
Check the dress code. You don't want to be sweltering in a suit unnecessarily, or working out ways to keep people from noticing your flip-flops.
