A favourite politician? No way, say 50pc in poll

Half of Hongkongers are so disenchanted with the city's lawmakers that they are unable to pick a favourite politician, a poll found.

In a survey of 1,023 people - commissioned by RTHK - more than 40 per cent said they were dissatisfied with the performance of lawmakers because they argued too much and were only out to serve their own narrow political interests.

Even those who did get some support - the Civic Party's Audrey Eu Yuet-mee and the New People Party's Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee - only registered 6.2 per cent and 5.4 per cent respectively in a 'who is your favourite lawmaker' poll.

Some 50.1 per cent of people said they could not choose a favourite.

'Long Hair' Leung Kwok-hung of the League of Social Democrats and People Power's Wong Yuk-man ranked third and fourth with 2.3 per cent and 2 per cent.

However, in a separate question, Leung and Wong were the most disliked lawmakers at 32.4 per cent and 20.2 per cent.

The survey was conducted by Chinese University's Centre for Communication Research over the phone two weeks ago.

Chinese University political scientist Ivan Choy Chi-keung said the poll showed that people were generally dissatisfied with the lawmakers' performance, while support for politicians holding different views had polarised.

The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong was ranked second as the party 'liked the most' (11.8 per cent) and 'disliked the most' (15.5 per cent).

The Democratic Party and Civic Party were favoured with 12.1 per cent and 9 per cent, but in the disliked category the league had 23.1 per cent and People Power 10.6 per cent.

More than 46 per cent said they could not choose a party to support.

A total of 45.5 per cent favoured a chief executive with a party background, but 38.4 per cent did not agree.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 per cent.
