Girl meets boy, rom-com style

A spy (or, in this case, an investigator) falls in love with the very person she's spying on. What a concept!

And the rest of Jingle Ma's rom-com Love You You is the same, every cause and effect is predictable. At no point are you genuinely surprised. No, that's not fair - there's one unpredictable angle in the film which, although intriguing, is tacked on like a loose accessory only there to give the appearance of depth.

Private investigator Xiami (Angelababy) is sent on an assignment to get her hands on the financial documents of You Lele (Eddie Peng) in a case of suspected fraud.

Needless to say, he eventually finds out her intentions and they fall for each other. This is, after all, a rom-com, the most cliched of genres, with never a solid chance of swaying too far from the original formula.

Love You You could've been called Never Ending Story 4. It's not that long - the official running time is only a measly 91 minutes. Structurally, though, the film could have started rolling the final credits on a few occasions. It's almost as though Ma wants to lure you into a game - hah! You thought it was over. Guess again.

Be warned: in Act Three, you will be bombarded with a series of blatant product placements - um, I mean scenes. This is as 'in your face' as it gets, very much akin to what Mike Myers was spoofing back in the '90s. YouTube it.
