Arrows set to strike F1 deal in territory

THE Arrows Formula One outfit, which is close to signing a deal with engine manufacturer Hart to supply a new-three litre unit, is looking to Asia to finance its 16-race 1995 campaign.

Arrows have commissioned London-based corporate consultants, Incide, to assess the level of interest in the Southeast Asian region.

Incide representative Allard Marx has been in Hong Kong drumming up support.

He also visited Kuala Lumpur and flew to Taipei yesterday before returning to London.

'We are setting a target of raising US$40 million in the Southeast Asian region,' Marx said yesterday.

'The region has untapped potential and we see Formula One racing as a great vehicle for Asian-based regional and international companies broadening their exposure.

'I have spoken to five large companies already and received a good reaction. They are very enthusiastic,' he added.

Marx said he was not in a position to name companies at this stage.

But he did say the companies were in the motor-related industries, clothing and electronics.

Motorsport is a growth industry in the Southeast Asian region with a Formula One-standard track already on-line in Sentul, Indonesia, and another due for completion in 1996 in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai.

Marx said he planned to return to Hong Kong in January with a senior representative of the Arrows team and may announce the team's two drivers in the region in March.

'We are negotiating with current Formula One drivers plus others from F3000 and F3,' he said.
