Alibaba Cloud is deploying artificial intelligence to make waste incineration more energy efficient in China, supporting the nation’s goal to become carbon neutral by 2060.
The AI algorithm developed by Alibaba Group Holding’s cloud service unit is currently used in 100 waste-burning facilities spread across 30 cities on the mainland. It will be installed in another 300 plants by the end of the year.
The installation of Alibaba’s AI platform can lead to the generation of an additional 360 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity each year from the 100 waste-burning facilities across China, enough to power 33,600 American households, according to Alibaba Cloud.
“Through automation, we’ve changed how garbage treatment plants operate, [to] reduce work pressure on the operators, slash environmental pollution and lower costs for equipment maintenance,” said Zeng Zhenyu, vice-president of Alibaba Cloud.

Solid waste disposal has been a perennial problem for Chinese cities over the years. The nation of 1.4 billion people produced around 235.1 million tonnes of solid waste in 2020, and is on pace to generate 326 million tonnes by 2030.
Faced with ever-growing mounds of garbage and many landfills reaching capacity much earlier than expected, garbage disposal through waste-to-energy plants is an important tool to tackle waste.
China has the largest installed waste-to-energy capacity in the world, which has been increasing at a compound annual growth rate of 29 per cent. The total installed capacity of China’s waste-to-energy plants was estimated to be 17.29 gigawatts (GW) in 2021, according to Shenzhen-based market research firm AskCI Consulting.
Currently, China processes over 580,000 tonnes a day of domestic waste through waste-to-energy incineration, according to China’s economic planner, the National Development and Reform Commission.

Traditionally, waste burning has been a labour-intensive task that requires operators to constantly adjust temperature and air pressure in the furnace, leading to inefficiencies. It is also resource-intensive and spews pollutants into the atmosphere.
Alibaba Cloud’s AI assesses combustion levels based on images of flames captured by cameras in the furnace. Based on the shape of the flames, the algorithm can detect incomplete combustion and automatically adjust parameters such as temperature, oxygen level and steam level to maintain the incinerator operating at peak efficiency, reducing harmful emissions, and optimising the energy output.
It means there is less need for human intervention to shut down and restart furnaces to stabilise production. Automatic tuning also means incinerators can generate more energy from the same amount of waste.


However, there is still room for improvement, said Zhang Jingning, project manager at the Wuhu Ecology Center, a non-governmental organisation, pointing out that some incinerators burn recyclable materials like plastics, rubber and fabric, which can be separated and further reduce the carbon footprint.
“Apart from increasing burning stability, we would also like to see more garbage management plants invest in garbage sorting, to have a more diversified approach to waste management,” he said.
