Ashley Alder, chief executive of Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission, has decided to leave the regulator when his contract expires in September next year, a spokesman for the regulator said on Monday evening.

Alder, who been the CEO since October 2011, has decided not to seek to renew his contract when it expires on 30 September 2020.

“Mr Alder has been at the helm of the SFC for eight years during which the organisation has pursued a set of intensive policy and operational reforms to tackle market risks as well as setting itself as a tough, competent and effective market regulator,” the SFC spokesman said.

“The changes which have been put in place are now embedded and institutionalised and Mr Alder believed it is the right time to hand over to new leadership,” he said.

It is not clear if a replacement for Adler has been found as yet.
