Hongkongers starved of after-work dining and places to relax, be entertained and keep fit, have embraced the opportunities afforded by the eased Covid-19 social-distancing rules.
The rush some operators anticipated has not occurred at many venues, so the rebound in business is expected this weekend.
A softening of more than three months of tough restrictions is reason to celebrate and enjoy, but revellers have to keep in mind that there is still every need to be cautious and stay safe.
As the hundreds of daily cases remind, the disease is still with us and until it is under control, there is no chance of life returning to as it was before.
Popular restaurants have been in high demand and tables at some are reserved for the next two months. Rules requiring premises to have a maximum of four people dining together and a 50 per cent capacity limit on who can eat and when.


Cinemas have not jumped at the opportunity to allow patrons to snack while watching films, more than half deciding that checking records to meet vaccination requirements is too difficult.
While fitness and sports facilities have been allowed to reopen, hundreds of days of lost business in the past two years means that many customers are likely to be wary of the fine print in contracts for the former, and touts trying to take advantage of government booking systems for the latter.
Some business sectors and public places remain closed; mahjong parlour owners are among those lamenting still being unable to resume operations and beaches and swimming pools remain off-limits.

They will be able to open in upcoming stages of easing if infections are kept in check. That puts the onus on those who have been able to benefit from the relaxations to ensure rules are followed.
Failure to abide by regulations necessitating staff and customers are vaccinated and when required, have a negative test result, capacity limits adhered to and masks worn, risks spreading the illness.
Rules have not always made sense to some people and there have been occasional missteps in the government’s Covid strategy. But after more than two years, authorities are better versed in how to keep the city safe.
The next stages of easing depend on all in the city working together to prevent infections.
