The secretary for security has attracted the ire of women's groups and members of the public after saying that women should drink less to avoid being raped. The city saw a 60 per cent year-on-year increase in the number of rapes in the first quarter, and Lai said many of the victims had been "drinking quite a lot of alcohol". He has been lambasted for blaming the victims rather than the perpetrators and was urged to apologise.

Long the king of the financial services information market, the US giant saw its reputation battered by revelations that its reporters had been using information from subscribers' data terminals to trawl for news stories. The company pledged to keep news gatherers away from the US$20,000-per-year terminals. But the damage may already have been done.

"Superman" seems to be losing his mystical powers. Firstly, his ports empire and its contractors had to settle with striking dockers to end a 40-day stoppage. Now his Cheung Kong (Holdings) conglomerate has been forced to withdraw plans to sell rooms at its Apex Horizons project in Kwai Chung, under pressure from regulators who found that the scheme, which neatly avoided the government's new stamp duty, breached investment rules.
