Hong Kong Rugby Sevens fans should drink responsibly

Over 120,000 visitors are expected for the 41st Rugby Sevens, setting the stage for another great year for this Hong Kong sporting tradition.

With David Hasselhoff, the Proclaimers and an ABBA tribute band, Bjorn Again, kicking off the party at last night’s concert, participants at the Sevens are being treated to a week of festivities.

Throughout the event, the Hong Kong Forum for Responsible Drinking would like to remind our friends and loved ones to celebrate this extravaganza responsibly.

Established in 2010, the forum is a coalition of Hong Kong’s leading beer, spirits and wine companies, formed with the mission of educating the public on the need to drink responsibly. It partners with the government and social organisations to educate Hong Kong citizens on the risks of drink driving, binge drinking, drinking during pregnancy and underage drinking.

Drinking can be an enjoyable part of life as long as individuals consume alcohol safely. With alcoholic beverages readily available at Sevens-related festivities and inside and outside the stadium, participants are encouraged to make informed, responsible decisions – such as following recommended limits on alcohol consumption and only drinking on a full stomach – to best enjoy the festivities.

Furthermore, we hope all participants will be mindful to avoid and prevent binge drinking, a concern at sporting events where extra peer pressure can drive visitors to consume too much. It is important to pledge to act responsibly, even in times of celebration.

Despite Hong Kong having one of the lowest alcohol consumption levels in the world, we should remain vigilant. The forum encourages everyone to take the issue of responsible drinking seriously, to prevent accidents from happening.
