Hong Kong’s hiking trails under threat from country park litterbugs

Organisers of an international boot-camp-style obstacle race in Hong Kong came under fire after plastic bottles and cordage from the race were found strewn on the beach at the ecologically sensitive Ha Pak Nai in Yuen Long, on April 14. Photo: Handout

Our beautiful parks and hiking trails are one of Hong Kong’s greatest treasures. So I was shocked and angry on Sunday, when hiking on stage two of the Maclehose trail, at the large amounts of litter along the route.

The main offender was discarded plastic bottles. At one pagoda where hikers can rest, there were piles of plastic bottles left on the floor. How can people be so selfish and lazy?

We must get tough on these litter bugs and look at other solutions to the problem. Littering our beautiful parks is shameful.
