Are young Christians in Hong Kong being distracted by technology?
Religion is a matter of the heart. We Christians believe that people have to be personally touched by God before they make a commitment. I am, however, perplexed that the local Christian population has stayed low for the last few decades. It probably has something to do with the popularity of technology.
People prefer to spend their time watching YouTube videos, rather than read long passages from the Bible and divine teachings.
A considerable number of our local churches stick to spiritual themes in their sermons. People, especially youngsters, tend to focus on the application of truths and therefore consider Christianity irrelevant.
Many Hongkongers love to enjoy life. They are not willing to give up freedoms and indulgences for the sake of regular church activities.
Also, there are many competing religions in the market, such as Taoism and Buddhism. Most of our population are of Chinese origin – they believe that these alternatives are more akin to Chinese culture and tradition.
