Hong Kong may be open to LGBT rights, but acceptance of sexual minorities is still a way off

The change of sentiment among most Hong Kong people towards the LGBT community is pleasing. Yet, as long as we have a government that feels it is their place to indoctrinate their interpretation of marriage and equality, little will change in Hong Kong (“Study shows growing support for same-sex marriage in Hong Kong”, July 3).

Gigi Chao, daughter of the tycoon Cecil Chao Sze-tsung, is correct in saying that the long-standing stigma against homosexuals will not go away unless people are more open about talking about sexual diversity. However, Ms Chao missed out one word – people have to “accept” sexual diversity and recognise that it is not sexual depravity.

Gay marriage would be more at home among Hong Kong’s traditions than court suggests

We need large local employers to understand and implement policies that recognise the benefits to them that a fully open and inclusive work force delivers. The LGBT community is seeking nothing more than our right to be treated as equal members of the society we help to build.
