Donald Trump did not invent racism against Chinese in America: and things are actually getting better

I refer to the article by Chi Wang, “Welcome no longer: how, under Trump, the American dream is now out of reach for Chinese immigrants” (October 18). I ask Mr Wang, when did Donald Trump ever speak of Chinese-Americans with “hate and scorn”? Even “fake news” CNN never claimed US President Trump spoke ill of Chinese-Americans.

Citing what he claims happened to him, Mr Wang implies that any past prejudice against Chinese-Americans as a whole was merely benign, motivated out of “curiosity and ignorance”. He wants readers to think that prejudice was an invention of Donald Trump.

In the 1970s, in grade school, I was sometimes, without any prompting, told to “go back to China”. By the 1980s, I had to at least get into an argument before hearing such comments. Now, luckily, such comments are rare. So things are getting better, not worse.
