Trump has more dignity than the mobs that hate him

Letter writer Johnathan Lewis (“Death of George H.W. Bush underlines what’s lost under Trump”, December 5) quotes George Cassidy Payne (“Tear gas used on children: this is not my America”, December 2) in his lament for the loss of dignity and respect under the Trump administration – blaming it, of course, on Donald Trump.

I believe that the vast majority of sensible people would look at the outrageous behaviour of the deranged, anti-Trump mobs, and the seemingly untreatable infection that is “Trump derangement syndrome”, and agree wholeheartedly that there is a lack of respect today. Why have the anti-Trump mobs lost the basic dignity that most of us, particularly the current US president, still possess?

One only has to check out the nastiness emanating from the left-wing media in the United States upon the death of George H.W. Bush, to appreciate that we are now incapable of even letting former presidents die with dignity.

Lessons to be learned from the George H.W. Bush presidency

With the death of former president George H.W. Bush of the United States, the world has lost a great statesman and wise leader. Along with the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, he ended the cold war that had plagued the world for decades.

Even after rejuvenating the US’ relationships with Russia, he did not gloat, but made efforts to assimilate the former Soviet countries into the global community. Bush is also remembered for helping Kuwait fight the Iraq invasion, with the United Nations supporting his effort with sanctions.

Succeeding presidents of the US could have learned many a lesson from him.
