I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible. It is far more powerful, faster, and smarter than the current standard. American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind. There is no reason that we should be lagging behind on.........

Trump has made China’s Huawei famous around the world
- The US president’s battle with Huawei has made the Chinese brand a household name around the world
Recently, US President Donald Trump tweeted that he wants America to power ahead in advanced technologies, such as 5G or even the non-existent 6G. His words seem to imply that he wants the US to achieve this by way of competition, not by blocking foreign competition.
However, in reality, Trump is trying to seriously hold back Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, by stopping it from entering the local market. Moreover, he is also trying to coax and coerce his European allies to follow suit, sending Secretary of State Mike Pompeo around central Europe to deliver his message (“Huawei or US: Pompeo issues warning to allies that use Chinese firm”, February 22).
On the other hand, in a television interview, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei sarcastically said his company was not widely known around the world until Trump went after the company by telling US allies to join forces in not using its products. Ren said he was grateful to Trump for that.
Indeed, amid a sea of discontent, anger and protest in the Chinese world, in all fairness, we should also give Mr Trump a word of thanks – not for promoting “fair competition” in the world of advanced technologies, but for his relentless efforts in making sure that Huawei is a globally recognisable brand. Hopefully, this will bring the company many new contracts.
