Seven steps Boris Johnson must take to secure a brilliant future for the Conservative Party

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is a smart survivor. He can take seven steps to guarantee a brilliant political future for the Conservative Party.

First, hold a timely referendum to bury former prime minister Theresa May’s agreement with the European Union (EU) once and for all. This will also help Johnson regain the initiative to bargain hard for Britain.

Second, explore the so-called Swiss option. There is no reason why Britain should be treated worse than Switzerland, which is not a member of the EU. This will give him the necessary advantage to work out a similar arrangement with the EU.

Third, win the hearts and minds of the Scottish people and convince them that Scotland will get a better deal via Brexit. Such a deal will, however, have to rule out a no-deal Brexit and outline clear prospects for a better agreement with United States President Donald Trump.

Fourth, the Swiss model will help Northern Ireland avoid a hard border with Ireland as the Swiss do not have a hard border with Austria and Germany at Lake Constance.

Switzerland is not part of the EU but it is a member of the EU’s Schengen Area, within which passport controls are abolished at mutual borders.

Fifth, London must remain the financial centre of Europe and not governed by EU law.

Sixth, Johnson must win the support of all the anti-Jeremy Corbyn factions in the opposition Labour Party to secure a parliamentary majority via a cross-party alliance.

Seven, let his charming girlfriend play a useful role as the host of 10 Downing Street.

Good luck, Boris.
