When Cathay Pacific bows to Chinese pressure, it is turning its back on loyal Hong Kong customers

On August 15, Cathay Pacific issued a statement in support of the government, saying, “We resolutely support the Hong Kong SAR government, the chief executive and the police in their efforts to restore law and order.” The airline’s statement is woefully lacking in sentiment for its own customers, the residents of Hong Kong, who have been peacefully and lawfully demonstrating by the millions for months against the government’s policies and against the excessive and disproportionate use of force by the police in flagrant violation of international norms.

Cathay’s full-throated support of the government and the police without any mention of the residents of Hong Kong begs the question: do Swire Pacific and Cathay Pacific officials ever look out of their lofty office windows to absorb what is going on around them? Apart from currying favour with the powers that be during a period of dire community distress, might not these gentlemen have spared a few words of solace for their most loyal customers, the residents of Hong Kong?

While a modicum of sympathy could be reserved for the Cathay management which is being pressured by China’s air safety officials, it would appear they were too willing much too quickly to fire employees who are entitled to a presumption of innocence in one case and to exercise freedom of speech in another, in accordance with Hong Kong and British laws. One must conclude that kowtowing is back in fashion for certain corporate types who wish to profit from China above all else.

Cathay Pacific has taken the right stand

Cathay Pacific has responded magnificently to the disruption caused to 55,000 passengers as a result of the airport closure. The company is also justified in dismissing the pilots who abused their privilege and contributed to the unrest that threatens the stability of Hong Kong. Actions have consequences and I am proud Cathay Pacific has taken a stand against intolerable behaviour.
