Hong Kong lessons for newly elected Macau chief executive

Ho Iat-seng, newly elected as the third chief executive of Macau, is seen as a rather enlightened and moderate politician, on account of his emphasis on hearing more voices during his tenure as president of the Legislative Assembly.

As an experienced businessman and politician, Mr Ho would, no doubt, be able to amalgamate both economic and political power to create a more harmonious environment – the top priority of his imminent governance of the former Portuguese colony.

Given his capability and background, Mr Ho was destined to be chosen as the new chief executive by the central government in Beijing. He has said his criteria for selecting the five secretaries are that they must be incorruptible and impartial, both prerequisites for a trustworthy government.

To balance the interests of people from all walks of life and to minimise political crises, like the present one in Hong Kong, are tough tasks.

Mr Ho must prudently gather a new team of incorruptible and honest officials, who would certainly play a crucial role in ensuring the stability and prosperity of Macau.

Most importantly, Mr Ho must first set a good example for his subordinates. He needs to create not only a harmonious environment, but also a city of justice and compassion.
