With billions of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs) discarded every year across the globe, ensuring that these batteries are kept out of the waste stream through proper disposal and recycling has become more critical. Bergsoe Metals – a recycling pioneer in Thailand – has risen early to the challenge and has maintained for more than a decade an environmentally sound operation to produce high-purity lead ingots and lead alloys from ULABs.

“It makes economic sense to salvage precious lead from battery scrap, but this should be done in an eco-friendly and socially responsible manner,” says Li Guosheng, managing director.

Employing advanced green technologies, Bergsoe Metals recovers pure lead and lead alloys from used batteries without contaminating the environment. Apart from an ISO 9001 quality management system certification, the company’s factory in Saraburi meets ISO 14001 environment management standard.

The facility is equipped with a state-of-the-art water treatment system to transform sulphuric acid and other harmful waste water into reusable clean water. An air filtration system at the plant ensures that no harmful emissions can escape into the atmosphere. The company has been awarded a gold certificate for industrial waste management by Thailand’s Ministry of Industry.

Bergsoe Metals remains the sole lead smelter in Thailand capable of producing pure lead. Branded as XINXIN.BML PB99.994, its pure lead product is registered and certified at the London Metal Exchange. Bergsoe Metals also produces a calcium lead alloy series for use in maintenance-free automobile batteries while its copper tellurium lead alloy series and lead E alloy have found applications in the cable industry.

Primarily catering to a domestic client base, Bergsoe Metals has earned the trust of Japanese, German and American multinationals that are into battery and chemical production in Thailand. It also has a growing list of international customers.
