Game review: Deus Ex Go is a fun puzzler for smartphones
With its turn-based gameplay and dependence on stealth and analysis, Deus Ex Go is worth a shot, even if you’ve never played the titles in the original series

Just days before it unleashed Deus Ex: Mankind Divided for consoles and PC earlier this month, gaming company Square Enix released a puzzle game related to the series.
Deus Ex Go is the second game for smartphones by Square Enix this month. A couple of weeks earlier it released Mobius Final Fantasy, an action game based on the Final Fantasy series.
Deus Ex Go is a turn-based puzzle game similar to Hitman Go and Lara Croft Go. This is a new game genre in which player movements are inspired by moves on a chessboard. Instead of the usual square boxes, the game works on hexagonal grids with multiple nodes. These nodes are like the squares on a chessboard.
The game is set in a futuristic world in which danger is everywhere. A terrorist outfit has taken hold of a Russian billionaire and is planning something big. Agent Adam Jensen, the protagonist from the Deus Ex series, is sent to stymie the plot.
The key objective is to get through the hexagonal grids by dodging or neutralising terrorists and finding clues that lead to the victim. The turn-based gameplay allows players to take as much time as they want to plan their next step. The game design doesn’t allow you to run and take down an enemy from the front. Planning the move, confusing the enemy and using stealth to sneak behind them is the only way to progress.
Deus Ex Go offers some tough, logical puzzles to unravel.
The game gets tougher the further along you go, and at times you can’t make a headway without utilising an invisibility power-up. This makes Jensen disappear for two moves, allowing him to go past anyone without getting noticed. The number of times you can use this power-up is limited; there are in-app purchases, but they can only get you hint packs, which can help you find a way through difficult situations.
The game uses a fixed third-person view, as most strategy games tend to do. It is not as graphics-heavy as some smartphone games by big gaming houses, but the players and characters look distinctive. The atmosphere reminds me of a computer-driven futuristic world.
Deus Ex Go is a great addition to the turn-based genre. Even if you are not an ardent fan of the Deus Ex series, the game is worth trying for the fun challenge it presents.
