South Korean audiences love their buddy cop comedies – and this movie certainly ranks among the best on offer in the past year. As a mismatched pair of crime-fighting rookies, Park Seo-joon and Kang Ha-neul do their burgeoning careers no harm with a most entertaining outing. (Opens on August 31)

Few female screen villains are more convincingly immoral than Florence Pugh in this adaptation of Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novella based on Shakespeare’s play. Gorgeously shot, director William Oldroyd’s chamber piece shows humanity at its ugliest. (Now showing)

A conventional sports drama made special by its poignant portrayal of family love and salient women-empowering message, this Bollywood blockbuster – based on the coming-of-age tales of Indian wrestling heroes Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari – is recommended viewing for girls everywhere. Chow Yun-fat revealed glimpses of his superstar persona in this gripping 1984 drama, set during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong and co-starring Alex Man Chi-leung and Cecilia Yip Tung. (September 3, part of the Hong Kong Film Archive’s Cine Memories of the War of National Resistance programme)

Known more for his prolific work rate than his nuanced acting, the ever-popular Louis Koo Tin-lok puts in one of his career-best shifts in this brutal action thriller, playing an anguished father out for bloody vengeance. Already, there is talk of a best-actor nod for Koo in the year-end film awards. (Now showing)
