The amazing true story behind the creation of DC Comics’ most popular superhero character at the moment is reconstructed in fascinating detail in this excellent biopic – a surprisingly kinky romance involving psychology professor William Moulton Marston, his wife, and their mutual lover. (Opens on November 23)
Finnish writer-director Aki Kaurismaki puts his deadpan humour to use in this alternately hilarious and heartbreaking drama. The humanist tale of a Syrian refugee who is in Helsinki to look for his sister and apply for asylum won him the best director prize at this year’s Berlin film festival. (Opens on November 23)
3. Gook
The 1992 Los Angeles riots provide the backdrop for this insightful tale of racial tension, told from the perspective of two Korean-American brothers. The fearless gem is just the second feature by writer-director-star Justin Chon, whose acting highlights include a role in the Twilight series. (Opens on November 23)
From the director behind disposable horror outings such as Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015) and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014) comes an equally derivative, albeit utterly engrossing, teen horror. Christopher Landon’s fantasy slasher film is genre cinema at its best. (Opens on November 23)
5. Manhunt
Is this John Woo’s exhilarating return to form – or a poor send-up of his 1980s classics? Critics are divided, but there’s no denying the guilty pleasure of this tightly paced and more than a little ridiculous action thriller, starring the mismatched duo of Zhang Hanyu and Masaharu Fukuyama.
