1. Phantom Thread

In his final film, Daniel Day-Lewis gives a bizarrely charismatic turn as a pre-eminent London dressmaker haunted by his mother’s spirit and trapped by his own idiosyncratic routines. Somehow Vicky Krieps, a little-known actress from Luxembourg, proves to be his match as the couturier’s muse. (Opens on March 8)

2. The Square

After offering a grim but fascinating look at a marriage’s disintegration in Force Majeure , Swedish writer-director Ruben Östlund turns to the pitfalls of trusting your fellow man in this often hilarious art-world satire, set around a contemporary art museum preparing to launch its next big exhibition. 3. Call Me by Your Name

The 89-year-old James Ivory finally won an Oscar with his screenplay for this tender gay romance, adapted from André Aciman’s 2007 novel. It was a richly deserved honour for the living legend, who has three previous Oscar nods for his directing of The Remains of the Day, Howard’s End and A Room with a View. (Now showing)

4. Salyut 7

Tired of seeing risky space missions receive the standard Hollywood treatment? Then look no further than this edge-of-the-seat Russian thriller by director Klim Shipenko, charting a true-life mission to save a highly advanced piece of technology and avoid losing face to the Americans at the height of the cold war. 5. The Shape of Water

Don’t miss the Oscar best picture winner on the big screen – and the chance to debate its credentials with all your film buddies. With this wondrous fantasy romance, the fantasy film maestro Guillermo del Toro has now become the fourth Mexican director in five years to win the best director Oscar. (Now showing)
