Over the years the wild monkeys in northern Hong Kong’s parks have become popular tourist attractions. This masks the growing problems associated with a massive population explosion. A government sterilisation programme has cut the number of monkeys to 2,000. Visitors should be aware there have been isolated but increasing reports of people being attacked by monkeys. 529 complaints were reported in 2013, usually attacks attempting to steal food. There have also been increasing reports of monkeys straying into urban areas.
