As of June 11, there had been 1,288 known cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers) resulting in 498 deaths. The crisis began in South Korea when a man carrying the disease returned from the Middle East on May 11. To date, 145 people in South Korea have been hospitalised and 15 have died.
