The best gigs in Hong Kong over Art Basel week

Basement Jaxx will get you moving in Repulse Bay.
You’ve spent all day looking at art, you’ve maybe had a few glasses of champagne and now you’re ready to kick on. If you’re feeling like partying after the doors close at the Convention and Exhibition Centre, there’s a range of quality nighttime events being organised ahead of and during Art Basel weekend. Here’s our pick of the best

Go South Weekender

A line-up of international and local acts will be performing all weekend at the Hotshot American diner in Repulse Bay. Headlined by international artists including UK dance music duo Bassment Jaxx, US hip hop outfit Naughty By Nature and New York house music pioneer Kenny Dope,  and supported by local artists including rap sensations 24 Herbs, this free event is likely to be rammed – so RSVP early via the link below.

March 14-15, 4pm-midnight

Hotshot – The Ocean Club, 28 Beach Road, Repulse Bay

Art Department

This Canadian dance music duo made up of Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White have earned a devoted local following during several visits to the city in recent years – and now they are appropriately coming back during Art Basel weekend. Closely linked to the on-trend dance music brands Hot Natured and Crosstown Rebels, the duo’s performance will also celebrate the fourth anniversary of local dance music promoters Small & Tall. Come expecting a big night.

Orbital

Pioneering British act Orbital – made up of brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll – came together in 1988 and helped set the course for contemporary electronic music. Their 1994 performance on the main stage of Glastonbury was a watershed moment for dance music, paving the way for the future crossover success of outfits such as the Chemical Brothers. On March 14, Phil Hartnoll will be at Kee Club for a late-night journey through the past – and also the future – of electronic sounds.

Spank Rock

After the influential Los Angeles street artist Cyrcle unveils a new mural on the walls of the Central hotspot Fly, underground rapper Spank Rock from West Baltimore will be taking to the stage to drop some rhymes. Spank Rock has previously toured with Beck and M.I.A., and his most recent album included collaborations with the likes of Santigold and Boys Noize – so you could say he keeps pretty good company.
