Three insider's tips for Hong Kong music lovers

A Lazarus species is an animal that was presumed to be extinct, only to be rediscovered years later. Percival Records is one such creature: a street-level record shop. Tucked behind the clothing stalls and fast food shops of Wing Kut Street in Sheung Wan, the store was founded by the Shiu family in 1977. The focus is on classical, but not exclusively. Flipping through its neatly ordered shelves of LPs and CDs reveals a mix from old-school crooners such as Teresa Teng to a mint vinyl imprint of Michael Jackson's Dangerous (HK$338), and a limited edition LP of Russian violinist Yuri Bashmet playing Brahms (HK$500).

HK Blues Rock Guitar Shop - for vintage instruments

Jimi Hendrix wannabes can pick up a passable electric guitar on the cheap at any number of music stores around town, but only one outlet would win the blessings of the gods of rock. Apart from new models, Hong Kong Blues Rock Guitar Shop also stocks a range of vintage axes such as Fender Telecasters and Gibson Les Pauls dating back to the 1950s and mostly made in the US from top-quality components. These guitars don't come cheap (one model that caught our eye was a 1954 Gibson Les Paul for about US$25,000), but are a good investment as they can only increase in value. Adam Wright

Walls of Sound - heaven for vintage vinyl fans

For fans of authentic and vintage vinyl, this is a slice of heaven. In the small store hidden away on the third floor of an unnamed building in SoHo, the shop owner — a jazz enthusiast — has a collection made largely of classical and jazz records.

Careful rummaging through the racks will reveal rare gems, including an Oscar Peterson album from 1974 and early Motown releases by Japanese labels. Prices are extremely reasonable, ranging anywhere between HK$150 and HK$500 regardless of rarity.
