Daniel Kang, a former member of K-pop outfit Wanna One, has revealed he will be launching a solo career, five months after the popular boy band broke up. Kang, who recently won a legal dispute with his former agency LM Entertainment, announced his forthcoming return to music during a live video on Instagram. Although the live broadcast only lasted for four minutes, it attracted more than 150,000 viewers within the first minute.

“I am preparing for the stage. I am working on my music, composing and writing lyrics. You won’t be disappointed, because I am thinking a lot about how to give a good message to you guys,” Kang said, hinting at a new album.

He admitted he was nervous during the live video, which was his first public appearance in five months. “I don’t know why I am so nervous,” Kang said. “You supported me a lot when I was going through hard times. Now I would like to give back to you.”

Kang recently founded a management agency based in Seoul’s Gangnam district called Konnect – which reportedly aims to connect Korea and the world through his music. The move came after a court ruling gave him the green light to leave his previous agency, LM Entertainment.

“Kang decided to establish his own company after thinking hard about what would be the best for his career in the long run,” the agency said in a statement.

Kang had been involved in a legal dispute with LM Entertainment since February when he filed a lawsuit against the agency with the Seoul Central District Court. According to Kang, the company had handed the rights to an exclusive contract to a third party without Kang’s approval.

The court allowed Kang to annul the contract with LM Entertainment, saying the company should not force Kang to sign any contracts, demand that he take part in any activities, or interrupt his activities in the entertainment business.

Kang made his debut with Wanna One in 2017 after he won season two of the music audition programme Produce 101. Although he is making a late start on a solo career compared to other former members of the group, he has ranked No 1 on the K-pop idol popularity charts for 62 weeks.
