Hollywood A-listers held a moment of silence at Sunday’s Oscars gala to show support “for the people of Ukraine currently facing invasion, conflict and prejudice within their own borders”.

Just before the Oscar plea for aid, Ukrainian-born actress Mila Kunis made a veiled reference to the trouble in her native land.

“While film is an important avenue for us to express our humanity in times of conflict, the reality is millions of families in Ukraine need food, medical care, clean water and emergency services,” read slides projected at the glamorous night celebrating the movie industry.

“Resources are scarce and we – collectively as a global community – can do more.”

Ukraine was willing to discuss becoming neutral as part of a peace deal, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday.

Kunis, on stage to introduce a contender for best song, said: “Recent global events have left many of us feeling gutted. Yet when you witness the strength and dignity of those facing such devastation, it’s impossible to not be moved by their resilience.

“One cannot help but be in awe of those who find strength to keep fighting through unimaginable darkness.”

Kunis, 38, was born in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi and immigrated to the United States at age seven. She has been active in raising money for Ukraine.

On March 20, Zelensky praised Kunis and her husband, actor Ashton Kutcher, on Twitter, saying they were “among the first to respond to our grief” and had raised US$35 million for Ukrainian causes.

“Grateful for their support. Impressed by their determination. They inspire the world. #StandWithUkraine,” Zelensky tweeted.

In another understated moment, actor Jason Momoa wore a handkerchief in blue and yellow, the colours of the Ukrainian flag.
