On May 4, K-pop sensation BTS kicked off their world tour extension “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself” in Los Angeles clad in custom-made outfits from Dior.

This is the first time that Dior has designed stage wear for a pop band, an indication of how K-pop celebrities have become the most influential stars for luxury labels in Asia and around the world.

“I love BTS because they are really great guys and also super into fashion,” says Kim Jones, the artistic director of menswear for Dior. “Everyone I know is kind of crazy about them!”

Jones designed seven stage costumes – one for each member – based on the utilitarian and futuristic vibe of Dior’s men’s pre-autumn 2019 collection, which was unveiled in Tokyo in December.

Jones first met the young K-pop stars while on a trip to Los Angeles earlier this year.

“We spoke about life in general and what fashion means to them,” he says. He then worked with each performer to create custom-made outfits after each member chose their favourite looks from the pre-autumn collection.

According to Jones, the seven outfits are inspired by the different personalities of the band members. Pieces include bombers, cargo pants and other utilitarian staples in shiny fabrics and patterns of cherry blossoms interlaced with dinosaur robots created by Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama.

The band will wear the outfits in upcoming concerts in New Jersey, Sao Paulo, Paris and London.

Known for their bold fashion choices both on stage and off duty, BTS have a knack for mixing high-end European brands such as Saint Laurent, Gucci, Bottega Veneta and Givenchy with street-style labels such as Mastermind x Japan, Supreme and Neighborhood.
