Today marks one year since the death of Karl Lagerfeld, the German-born creative force behind brands such as Chanel and Fendi who died in Paris aged 85.

To mark the anniversary, an intimate biography, Kaiser Karl: The Life of Karl Lagerfeld by Raphaelle Bacque, was given its first English print earlier this month (it was a bestseller in France when it was released there a few month after his death.)

French-born Bacque left no stone unturned during her research of the king of fashion, who was known for his trademark dark glasses, high starched collars and his eye for luxury.

The investigative journalist reached out to confidants and colleagues including Caroline of Monaco, perfumer Jacques Polge, Kering founder Francois Pinault and his bodyguard and right-hand man Sebastien Jondeau.
