The Met Gala of Hong Kong? Not quite – but the city’s elite looked fabulous in Chanel, Hermès, Alexander McQueen and more to open fashion exhibition at K11 Musea
- The opening party for the Savoir-Faire: The Mastery of Craft in Fashion exhibition at the K11 Musea mall in Hong Kong was billed as the Met Gala of Hong Kong
- Chanel and Alexander McQueen were the labels of choice, though others wore looks from fashion houses such as Schiaparelli, Balenciaga and Hermès
Billed as the Met Gala of Hong Kong, the opening party for the Savoir-Faire: The Mastery of Craft in Fashion exhibition at K11 Musea, in Kowloon, was hands down the most anticipated fashion event of the year on the city’s social calendar.
While it lacked high-octane star power – travel restrictions made it impossible for celebrities from the rest of Asia and Europe or the US to fly in for the occasion – it was a chance for the city’s glitterati to shine.
And shine they did – at least, some of them.
Clouds of tulle, intricate embroidery and lavish details reflected the theme of the exhibition, which celebrates the know-how of haute couture, the highest form of dress making, and is currently on view at K11 Musea.
Chanel and Alexander McQueen – both brands known for their painstakingly made confections – were the brands most represented at the event. We counted at least four looks from each label on the red carpet, or “gold carpet”, as the organisers rechristened the fashion parade for the occasion.
Here are some of the best looks from the glamorous soirée.
Justine Lee wore a tweed look with sequins from Chanel’s Métiers d’Art 2021 collection.
Kim Bui Kollar chose an outfit from hot label of the moment, Schiaparelli.
Elly Lam opted for a revealing, long-sleeved dress from London-based label Alessandra Rich.
Swimmer Stephanie Au wore a tweed jacket paired with a sequinned jumpsuit from Chanel’s fall/winter 2021 collection.
Alison El Azar looked festive in a sequinned, short dress with feathers from London brand 16Arlington.
Veronica Chou wore a vintage dress from French designer Thierry Mugler.
Victoria Tang looked beautiful in a pink outfit from US-based designer Carolina Herrera, while husband Christopher Owen opted for a velvet suit from Hermès.
Hong Kong-based designer Bonita Cheung is behind the ruffled tulle skirt in powder pink worn by Chelsea Chau, which she paired with a top from Cos.
Designer Anaïs Mak’s look, which featured denim trousers from Balenciaga, stood out for its edgy vibe.
Feiping Chang chose a frothy confection in aqua green from Chinese designer Ryzyoryuan.
Couturier Barney Cheng and PR maven Peter Cheung stole the show in beautifully made men’s qipao designed by Cheng.
