Five fashionable items to keep men warm this winter

“Winter is coming” we were promised, but temperatures were distinctly summery until the drastic drop a week ago. This cold front has prompted many to think about their winter wardrobe. Capes and mankets (man blankets) were all the rage last winter, but thankfully they didn’t make the cut this season. Here are five cool, cold-weather menswear trends.

Green with Envy

Grey and burgundy have been key colours on the autumn-winter runways for the likes of Valentino, Z Zegna and Lanvin but the standout colour trend this season is green in all its glorious varieties. A number of brands have focused on military green, the most muddy, moody and masculine shade. Balmain’s collaboration with H&M has grabbed headlines for its slightly gaudy, gold-inflected clothes but buried under the hype and bling is a pair of great military jackets in appropriate field green. Dunhill, Bottega Veneta and Berluti have all played with the darker end of green, but Burberry Prorsum has brightened things up with lighter greens, prints and patterns.

The Sons of Anarchy

The long-running and incredibly popular US TV show Sons of Anarchy was at the sharp end of a recent fad for biker culture, and even though the show has come to an end it’s still influential. Biker chic, particularly the biker jacket, is still finding favour and Asian designers such as South Korea’s Byungmun Seo are getting in on the act while adding a distinctly eccentric twist to the style staple. Oversized and Over Here

Have we seen the last of skinny fit? Drainpipes and tight tailoring have ruled the roost in menswear for more than a decade now but in recent seasons the seams have been let out a touch and this winter things have got seriously loose on top. Paul Smith, Dunhill, J.W. Anderson, Calvin Klein Collection and Lanvin, the list of brands doing oversized overcoats is endless, but Casely-Hayford wins points for his ethnic-flavoured effort and Jack Wills for its reasonably priced classic overcoat.

Baggy is Back

As well as coats, trousers are also getting the loose-fit treatment, even flares are being revisited. The totally loose look is not going to be for everyone, especially those who have become used to wearing trousers so tight they strangle the circulation. Shear Effort

Alessandro Michele at Gucci has done his best to make the ’70s cool again and a number of houses are also paying homage to the disco era with their use of fabrics, cuts and colours. Shearling is being used by many houses, from classic menswear brands such as Hackett London to young upstart brand J.W. Anderson. They have incorporated sheep skin in bags, sneakers and, of course, coats. Joyrich and Pyer Moss get top marks for using shearling with their biker jackets, which ticks two on-trend boxes this winter.
