Future stars of sustainable fashion show their designs for EcoChic award

Competition finalists, including Hong Kong pair, challenged to use upcycled textile waste in their entries for contest that recognises best practice in design and production of sustainable clothing

Finalists in a global eco-design award have provided a sneak preview of their collections.

Each of the 10 finalists in the EcoChic Design Award has released one of their designs for a photoshoot in which they were modelled by competition ambassador Bonnie Chen.

The pieces use of a variety of upcycled textile waste, from bed sheets, old wedding dress, discarded lining, care labels, and even iron scorched fabrics.

Now in its fifth year, the annual awards are open to emerging fashion designers living in any country in Asia and Europe. Hong Kong has two finalists – Tsang Fan-yu, a student at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, whose work is inspired by Zen philosophy, and Esther Lui, a design assistant, who incorporated care labels into her work.

The idea behind sustainable fashion design is to make clothes that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

The award winners will be announced and full collections shown during Hong Kong Fashion Week in January 2016.
