Hong Kong’s top Youtube videos and videomakers in 2015: We love comedy and music, not kittens and babies

We list Hong Kong’s favourite videos on YouTube.

Musical comedy videos, Korean boy bands and a handy guide to fixing your fan all dominated Hong Kong’s YouTube streams in 2015.

Top Hong Kong videos

In a list released on Thursday by YouTube owner Google, popular Hong Kong comedy group Bomba was revealed to have created six of the top ten locally-created videos, in terms of views.

Their clip titled Music Story, which has been watched more than 2.2 million times since it was put up in March, was 2015’s most popular video for Hongkongers.

It mashes together a selection of popular Cantonese and Mandarin language songs over the course of the video to tell a love story.

Bomba was followed in second place by FHProductionHK’s comedy video The days that I chase after girls in Hong Kong, and a helpful instruction guide on how to improve your fan.

Hong Kong’s favourite music videos

For music videos, Maroon 5’s Sugar music video reigned supreme locally, rating as the most watched video both in town as well as second worldwide.

In the video, the band drives to a series of weddings in Los Angeles and appears to surprise them by performing at their receptions.

Korean boy band Big Bang’s music video Loser came second, their first major release since 2012, and Wiz Khalifa’s See You Again, from the blockbuster Furious 7’s soundtrack, was the third most watched.

Global top YouTube videos

Traditional media snatched the top places globally for YouTube’s most watched videos in 2015, with clips from popular talk shows such as Jimmy Kimmel featuring very highly.

An adorable video of dance group Heaven King performing to Silento’s Watch Me, was viewed at least 115 million times to become the year’s most popular video.

An advertisement for mobile game Clash of Clans came in second while a husband who turned his house into an enormous ball pit while his wife was out was the third most watched.

The top music video globally

Internationally, the Furious 7 soundtrack’s See You Again, a tribute to actor Paul Walker who died in 2013, was the most watched video with more than one billion views.

In third place, Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do was viewed almost 850 million times globally.

A spokeswoman for YouTube Hong Kong said the creativity displayed by creators of video content both locally and internationally was “truly impressive”.

“The hours of content uploaded to YouTube increased by 65 per cent compared to last year, and 60 per cent of views came from mobile devices,” she said.
