The horrors of the 2008 financial crisis are made perversely funny by Anchorman director Adam McKay, who, together with an A-list cast, turn Moneyball author Michael Lewis’ non-fiction book into a smart and cunning ensemble farce. (Opens on January 21)

2. Three Colours trilogy

One of the landmarks of the art-house cinema in the 1990s, this trio of films by the inimitable Krzysztof Kieslowski are named after colours of the French flag – and deeply poignant in their meditation on love and loss. (January 22, 23 and 24, part of Cine Fan programme)

Rock ’n’ roll can save lives in this heart-warming musical drama by Linda Linda Linda director Nobuhiro Yamashita, which takes a refreshing look at redemption through the offbeat romance between an amnesiac ex-con and a youthful band manager. (Opens on January 21)

One of China’s eminent filmmakers steps forward to deliver a stunning performance in this gritty crime thriller, which sees Feng Xiaogang play a former gang leader who comes out of retirement in a Beijing society dramatically changed by capitalism. (Opens on January 21)

Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia left an indelible impression as Asia the Invincible – a male villain who has castrated himself to attain mythical powers – in this spectacular wuxia film, directed by Tony Ching Siu-tung. (January 24, part of 100 Must See Hong Kong Movies programme)
