Hong Kong dining specials: 15-year-old vintage beef, Mexican pop-up and a wine vs sake evening

Start your summer with specially aged French beef, add a little spice with tacos from a Mexican pop-up in Sai Ying Pun, before washing it down at a wine and sake night in Quarry Bay

Beef lovers should head to The Steak House Winebar + Grill at the InterContinental in Tsim Sha Tsui which is featuring the specially aged “vintage beef” of artisan butcher Alexandre Polmard. The special breed of French cattle is butchered in limited amounts before being aged and frozen using special techniques for up to 15 years.

It is then sold to high-end restaurants, at the Polmard shop in Paris and online. The selection is available until August 31 in dishes of beef and tuna tartare with French fries, beef maki with black truffle and oscietra caviar, and long-bone rib-eye. Bookings: 2313 2323

Test Kitchen in Sai Ying Pun is having a pop-up dining experience from June 21-25 featuring the dishes of Mexican chef Luis Aguilar from Tulum. Get your chance to savour the weekend taqueria lunch menu (HK$480)on June 24 and 25 with a choice of two tacos from a selection that includes lamb barbacoa with pickled red onion and salsa roja, and roast suckling pig with salsa verde, radish, cucumber pico and chicharron.

The evening tasting menu(HK$1,080) comes with cocktails and beer, and dishes that include sea scallop ceviche tostada with avocado and cilantro sprouts, prawns on mole verde, and tacos with hand-made tortillas. Book online at testkitchen.com.hk/luis.

Yosuke Suga of Sugalabo in Tokyo will be at the Krug Room at the Mandarin Oriental from June 13-17. The chef’s dishes are available at lunch for HK$3,988 plus 10 per cent, with five glasses of Krug including the vintage 2002 and rosé.

At dinner, the “experience” package is HK$7,488 plus 10 per cent, and comes with seven glasses of champagne including the Krug Clos du Mesnil 2003 and Krug vintages 1990 and 2002, while the “ultimate vintage” package (HK$9,988 plus 10 per cent for groups of six or more) includes Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 2003 and Krug Clos du Mesnil 2003. Yvonne Cheung, director of wine with Swire Hotels & Restaurants, and Elliot Faber, beverage director of Yardbird, Ronin and Sunday’s Grocery, will go head-to-head at a wine vs sake event on June 29 at Mr & Mrs Fox in Quarry Bay.

The five-course dinner is HK$650 plus 10 per cent, and includes Japanese cold soba noodles with slow-cooked pork belly, paired with the Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg Pinot Noir 2015 from Central Otago and Rairaku 58 Junmai Ginjo, Hyogo. The main course of rib-eye with bearnaise sauce is served with the Tenuta di Trinoro Le Cupole Cabernet Franc Blend 2013 from Tuscany vs the Okura Honke Tokubetsu Junmai Yamahai, Nara.
