Liu Liang San in Tsim Sha Tsui: authentic Taiwanese experience for less than HK$100

Delicious Taiwanese beef noodles and a pork chop rice that was close to perfection were the highlights at Liu Liang San. Pork knuckle was rich and hearty, but the sauce on dried tofu was too salty and otherwise flavourless

Those who are lamenting Hong Kong’s lack of good Taiwanese restaurants can rejoice at the opening of Liu Liang San, which serves up decent – and affordable – versions of classic dishes including beef noodle soup and braised pork on rice.

The new restaurant is on Ichang Street, just a few steps away from one of the busiest shopping districts in Hong Kong, but its dark wooden, Japanese-inspired interior has the feel of a cosy neighbourhood place in Taipei.

Three more places for great Taiwanese food in Hong Kong – and some of the best fried chicken going

The small menu contains standard Taiwanese classics, including several variations on the beef noodle soup.
Liu Lang San combo noodles.
I ordered the Liu Liang San combo noodles (HK$76), which comes with beef shank, tendon and ribs. The beefy broth had a deep flavour from long, slow simmering and we were pleased it was not too salty. I wasn’t a huge fan of the jellylike beef tendon; the springy, moreish noodles were the real star of the dish.
Braised pork rice.
We tried the braised pork rice (HK$28), which was pretty much close to perfection. This was the real deal – small pieces of slow-cooked fatty pork on a pillow of perfectly cooked rice. And at that price, it was a steal for a relatively large portion.
But we had mixed feelings about the other appetisers we tried.

Braised pork knuckles.

The Taiwanese dried tofu slices (HK$22) were covered in a sauce that was too salty and had little flavour. The braised pork knuckles (HK$48) were a bit too rich and hearty – although others are sure to say the dish should be that way. The gelatinous texture was authentic and the meat was suitably melt-in-the-mouth.
