American rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be headlining this year’s 20th-anniversary edition of Fuji Rock, Asia’s biggest music festival.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined the first edition of Fuji Rock in 1997, which ended in near disaster when a typhoon bore down on the festival on the slopes of Mount Fuji. The following year the festival was moved to a temporary location on the Tokyo waterfront and since 1999 it has been held at a picturesque ski resort in Naeba, Niigata prefecture, about 320 km away from Japan’s iconic mountain.

Since they formed in Los Angeles in 1983, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have won seven Grammy Awards and have become one of the best-selling bands of all time, selling over 80 million records worldwide.

With more than 150 international and local artists performing over seven main stages and other minor stages each year, Fuji Rock has over the years cemented its position as the region’s top music festival. In 2012, the festival attracted a record crowd of 140,000 and a similarly huge turnout is expected for this year’s 20th anniversary, including many people from Hong Kong.

Dozens more acts will be added to the Fuji Rock lineup in the coming weeks. For more information, visit fujirock-eng.com/
