3 go-to places for Hong Kong surfers to eat and drink after a day riding the waves

Burgers, pizzas, salad, beef brisket noodles, all-day breakfast - there’s protein and carbs aplenty on the beach or nearby

Pui O

Burgers + beer + beach = Mavericks. This surf shack on Lantau’s Pui O Beach is a beach-bum magnet that also rents water sports equipment. Treasure Island holds its surf lessons close by, so if you’re thinking about signing up, then Mavericks is the spot to hit afterwards. DJs such as Paul Hitchens serve up some chilled tunes. “I always order the Quinoa’s Ark with chicken and avocado ‘The Salad’ with bacon, chicken and avocado. And it’s all washed down with a Hobson Evolution cider that’s on tap,” Hitchens says. Tel: 5662 8552

Big Wave Bay

After a long day surfing, Hongkonger Rei Wai-chan heads to Ho Lok Store (Tel: 2809 4933) or Eric’s Kitchen (Tel: 9256 0553 ) in Big Wave Bay on the south end of Hong Kong Island. “Great pizza and burgers are hard to find in Hong Kong but Eric’s Kitchen never disappoints – it’s impossible not to love their juicy burgers.” She adds: “Ho Lok Store serves local-style food such as curry fried rice, beef brisket noodles and French toast – the quality combined with the cost makes it one of my favourite spots to eat at the Bay.. You can rent also rent a surfboard from here for HK$50 a day.”

Shek O

Ming’s Café near the roundabout in Shek O is buzzing at weekends. The menu includes pizzas, burgers and full English breakfasts, as well as fruit smoothies in summery flavours including pineapple and coconut. “Ming [the owner] supersizes my breakfast when he knows I’ve been out surfing all morning,” say Shek O surfer Sam Pleitgen.
