From searching for UFOs in Arizona to tracking lions on foot with Samburu guides in Kenya, a new category of adventure travel is now on the menu at Airbnb as the home-sharing start-up expands its offerings.

The company’s latest foray into tourism, called Airbnb Adventures, will start with more than 200 global activities. The offering is an extension of its tour service Airbnb Experiences, which the company started in 2016.

Adventures will offer more elaborate multi-day trips, where hosts act as tour guides, arranging itineraries, accommodation, meals and costs for up to 12 people at a time.

Some of those being offered allow customers to ride camels across the Moroccan desert, kayak and bike the Mekong River valley in Vietnam and explore cowboy life in the American West. Other adventure tours listed include snow camping with an overnight stay in an igloo in Canada’s Elfin Lakes, a farm stay in Indiana Amish country, a culinary kayak tour of Swedish islands and a trek in the Amazon jungle.

A lucky few will be able to live the adventures of Phileas Fogg from Jules Verne’s classic Around the World in 80 Days. Hosted by Airbnb, a small number of guests will travel across 18 countries using eight modes of transport, including a hot-air balloon, to promote the new collection of available bookings through Airbnb Adventures.

The experience is meant to mirror Fogg’s journey from exploring the Galapagos Islands to hiking mountain ranges in Australia, said Joe Zadeh, Airbnb’s vice-president of experiences.

“We thought that the notion of circumnavigating the globe and visiting all these different cultures and communities in 80 days is just a really fun and interesting premise,” he said.

Starting June 20, guests can book the 80-day trip, which comes with a price tag of US$5,000 and includes all travel, lodging, activities and meals. Guests will depart from London on September 1. The company did not say how many of the packages would be available.

Zadeh said the company chose to recreate the story of Around the World in 80 Days because it encompasses the spirit of the new programme – giving travellers an experience that is difficult to find anywhere else – at a reasonable price tag.
