New online shopping platform, Popmap, covers local niche brands

Finding niche brands and independent retailers isn't easy in a place like Hong Kong, as high rents often make it impossible for them to survive. A smart solution however has emerged in the form of a new shopping marketplace called Popmap, inspired by sites like Taobao and Farfetch.

Founded by entrepreneur Idris Sersoub and launched officially this month, the idea behind PopMap is simple: it's a platform for independent boutiques and emerging brands to showcase their wares online to a new generation of shoppers.

While Popmap may not be the prettiest of websites, it's easy to navigate with the option to search by retailer, item or even colour, with thumbnails showcasing the products available. As the name suggests, there is also an interactive map function allowing users to search by location rather than product. Customers can opt to "follow" specific shops and are notified whenever new products arrive. It's also available in app form for smartphones.

What the site lacks in design it makes up for in variety with a huge range of items including clothing, gadgets and furniture, beauty products, homewares and other accessories. Shoppers can also buy artisan chocolate, kids clothes and even artwork from Art Projects Gallery. Other local boutiques available include Konzepp, Kapok and Square Street.

Popmap currently works with 173 retailers showcasing around 15,000 products, and Sersoub has plans to expand the network beyond Hong Kong. Customers will appreciate other several services, such as receiving updates (sometimes in real time) of how many items are left in stock. All goods can be delivered within an hour for HK$60 per order (free shipping, local and international, is coming soon).
