Restaurant review: Risi e Bisi - relax over a drink

Rachel Williamson

Grilled watermelon steak at Risi e Bisi

Sometimes, all you need is a familiar setting close by to catch up with friends over a few drinks. If that's the case, and you enjoy a contemporary twist on Italian food, then Risi e Bisi, a traditional Venetian-style neighbourhood wine bar, offers a convivial, down-to-earth environment in which to make the most of the enterprising drinks menu, with rare Japanese whiskies, boutique craft beers, wines and a vast cocktail collection - and a tapas menu comprising 15 dishes. The venue's name translates into "rice and peas".

The tender and succulent 72-hour spare rib (HK$120) was the pick of the dishes, closely followed by the spicy lamb and pistachio meatballs (HK$80), recommendations that hit all the right spots.

We had no complaints about the quality of the fried scarmoza (HK$80) and eggplant parmigiana (HK$85) either, and the vegetarian pasta dish (not on the menu) was another welcome suggestion.
