Hong Kong Disneyland’s Crystal Lotus serves up unexpected surprises

Three Little Pigs barbecue pork bun, Olaf red bean bun and Chicken Little lotus paste bun all drew excited ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’

Crystal Lotus' Olaf dim sum.

FARE Upmarket dim sum experience at the happiest place on Earth. AMBIENCE Light, airy, contemporary Chinese décor. COST HK$1,500 for two. WHO TO BRING Kids and Disney fans. TURN-ONS The dishes we liked most weren’t the character-shaped buns. We enjoyed the goldfish-shaped garoupa and shrimp dumplings, pan-fried wagyu beef fillets with Mickey-shaped seafood pancake, and Crystal Lotus’s own XO sauce. The divinely juicy dumplings, a high-end twist on the humble har gao, came “swimming” on a bed of spinach soup. The beef fillets and seafood pancakes were chewy and full of flavour. We paired the heavenly XO sauce with most dishes. The Tasmanian crab and pumpkin stuffed in whole crab shell was soft and chewy. The Sichuan dan dan noodles used e-fu noodles, because the regular noodles had run out, but we enjoyed them. The sauce offered a lovely kick. Having the character buns was “Instagrammable”. We had the Three Little Pigs barbecue pork bun, Olaf red bean bun and Chicken Little lotus paste bun, all of which drew excited “oohs” and “aahs”. To order character dim sum, diners need to give 48 hours’ notice. TURN-OFFS Most of the character buns were too dry, and we would have preferred more filling. The taro in the Mickey-shaped double-layered taro and turnip cake overpowered the subtle turnip taste. DRINKS A selection of Chinese teas, wines and soft drinks.
