HEXA – a luxe ‘tea-shop’ with fine Cantonese fare

  • In elegant 1960s-style environs, diners can sample such modern bites as charcoal buns with egg custard cream and Iberico pork with honey sauce

FARE Cantonese

AMBIENCE From the team behind Club Cubic in Macau, HEXA has a 1960s Chinese tea-shop feel but with a contemporary flair, thanks to designers Steve Leung and Tino Kwan. The main dining area is named Passion and uses a variety of patterns and textures to create the atmosphere. We liked the beaded partitions between booths, which were common in the 1960s. The Lounge bar area is named Love, where they use leather, faux fur, velvet, mirror and metal. Both areas are elegant, contemporary spaces. We also like the outdoor patio and lawn on the harbourfront, which is popular for weddings and evening DJ music events.

COST Dinner is HK$800 a head.

WHO TO BRING Friends and out-of-towners.

TURN-ONS We loved the contemporary take on some of the dim sum such as the steamed shrimp dumplings in bamboo charcoal wrapping and the steamed bamboo charcoal buns with egg custard cream – they looked and tasted amazing. The black with gold flakes added drama to the dim sum favourites. The must-try Iberico pork with honey sauce was outstanding, as was the stir-fried blue lobster with turnip pudding, which went well with the butter sauce. This and other dishes are based on 1960s Cantonese fare but made up-to-date via new cooking techniques and other refinements. Another outstanding dish was the braised pearl rice with Matsutake mushrooms, morel and sea urchin; the rice absorbed the delicious mushroom flavours and the sea urchin topped the delectable dish.

TURN-OFFS It is about a 10-minute walk from the usual entrance into the mall on Canton Road.

DRINKS The lounge serves contemporary cocktails and wines.
