Alex: The Son of God

Alex is a homeless person in Sheung Wan, famous for conducting the traffic like an orchestra. He reveals to Jan Leung that he is actually the Son of God.

HK Magazine: What are you doing, Alex?
Alex:
I am conducting the traffic. Nobody can do it the way I do. I have special powers.

HK: What kind?
Alex:
You see, I am the Son of God. I think differently from you people… I have been on ATV, TVB – ever wonder how I can be on both channels? Because I am good-hearted, and I am the son of God.

HK: Your English is pretty good. Where did you go to school?
Alex:
School… That was horrible, let’s not talk about it. But I later worked as a merchandiser, and I have been to the Philippines, Macau and Taiwan. My English is better than the local university students’. Get me a university professor and I can guarantee I can speak better English than him or her. In fact, people have asked me to run for the district council but I refused. Why? Because I don’t want to be stabbed in the back. I hate the government.

HK: Where do you live?
Alex:
I am a sky-sleeper. I sleep on the streets. God will take care of me. Every day I use this trolley that my mother gave me and pick up things people have deserted on the street. See? [Searches through the many bags in his trolley and finds a pink coat.] Isn’t this beautiful? But people don’t want this. So I picked it up, washed it, and I’ll give it to someone who really needs it in the winter. I am an environmentalist.

HK: So how do you make a living?
Alex:
By selling things I collect on the streets. But I hate money. God gives me money all the time because I am a good man. Last night I picked up $20 from the street and it turned into a $50 bill this morning. I hate money, I don’t need it, but God keeps tucking money into my pocket. So I give out stuff whenever I can. I feed the fish by throwing the food I gathered into the pier, and I feed the birds as well. During Christmas, I dress up as Santa Claus and distribute presents to the kids. Why? Because I am a good man. You give, then you get.

HK: Do you have a girlfriend?
Alex:
No, no girlfriend or wife. [Suddenly he yells] Oh no! I found money again! Why is God giving me all this money? Now I have to find a way to give it away… Would you give away your money like that? I bet not! I am a happy guy. You can ask everyone around. I don’t need money. [Starts singing.]

HK: Why do you hate money so much?
Alex:
I don’t need it. I was a gambler before, a good gambler. I won the first prize twice. But I have quit gambling.

HK: Is that plastic stick you’re carrying something special?
Alex:
This is the Magic Wand given to me by God. You know, computers are only machines – they’re not like this Magic Wand. This can guide me through life. Now God has sent me on another mission – here, let me give you something [hands over a plate and a string of plastic pearls.]

HK: Thanks!
Alex:
Gotta go! Nice talking to you!
