Hong Kong Icon Yung Kee Calls for Last Orders
It’s nearly the end for Wellington Street’s legendary roast goose restaurant, which is being forced into liquidation after five years of legal wrangling.
The 77-year-old family business has its doors open for now, but no one knows for how long.
Yung Kee’s founder Kam Shui Fai passed most of his company’s shares to his two sons, Kinsen and Ronald Kam, when he died in 2004. Soon the two brothers turned against each other, fighting for control over the business.
In 2010, the older brother Kinsen, who held 45 percent of the shares, asked the court to wind up of the company. The fight continued even after Kinsen died in 2012: His widow has been waging the battle on his behalf.
The two sides of the family were unable to negotiate a settlement: Kinsen’s family rejected a $1.1 billion offer from Ronald’s children, who were running the company.
A deadline postponing liquidation expired on Wednesday night, and with the families failing to reach an agreement, the court ordered that the company be wound up.
